(more info)

The big news with this Office 2010 is that there will be two versions. The updated Office will be available in two separate formats

1/ A traditional PC-based edition.
2/ A completely web-based version.

Both products are expected to be released in the first half of 2010. The web-based element is interesting and looks like a challenge to rivals such as Google Doc's. The web-based version of Office 2010, will be called "Office web apps", this will include only Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote (so far anyway). Web apps apparently will give the user full browser-based viewing and lightweight editing of any Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote files. The apps will allow for multiple people to edit the same files concurrently (very much like Google Doc's), the user will also have the option of saving files online, although this will be dependant on the user having a Windows Live Skydrive account (which is free) to take advantage of the cloud-based storage.

One of the biggest changes however involves the product's core underpinnings. For the first time, Microsoft is offering a 64-bit version of the Office product. It's a clear recognition of the fact that the 32-bit world's days are numbered.

More to come .......
