SharePoint 2010: Preparing Your Infrastructure

SharePoint 2010 is now getting closer to release. So as you might expect Microsoft are offering us more and more information on how to get your infrastructure ready.A new post has just come out on the Microsoft SharePoint Team blog outlining the Preliminary System Requirements for SharePoint 2010. Here's a quick look:<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

·         It's all 64-bit: SharePoint itself, Windows 2008, SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008
·         Browser Compatibility: Brace yourself its a biggy— IE6 is out. However supported browsers on Windows systems will include IE7/IE8, Firefox 3.x. Microsoft will also increase compatibility for Firefox 3.x and Safari 3.x on non-Windows OS.

Another worry for organisation is: “Can I migrate directly from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010?” Well the answer to this is yes, there will be migration paths and tool developed for as smooth a transition as possible to the 2010 edition, whether this will be a Microsoft product remains unclear – Microsoft will most likely turn to their partners for a SharePoint Site Migration Manager tool (SSMM) solution – i.e. Quest or Metalogic (there are many others in this market). Salford Software are currently speaking to many partner vendors around SharePoint 2010 integration and looking at different MOSS 2007 migration options.
