SLES9/OES SP2 did not detect all hardware detected the hardware correctly.

This applies to:

  • OES (Linux)

Summary

A server was installed with the following hardware:

* 1 Intel S5000PAL Dual XEON Server Board
* 2 Intel 2U Passive 2*3.00GHz XEON Dual Core 771Pin 1333MHz FSB
4M Cache CPU
* 2 Kingston 2GB 667MHz DDR2 ECC Fully Buffered CL5 DIMM Dual
Rank, x4
* 3 Fujitsu 73GB 15K-RPM SAS 3Gb/s Hard Drive

Manufacturers diagnostics confirmed all hardware was recognised.

SLES9 was installed and the "top" and "free" commands show 2578364k (2.5GB) RAM (It should be 4GB) one cpu detected" (It should report 2 CPUs)

Solution

Updated the system to use the smp kernel - now sees processors correctly. Still only 3.5GB RAM.

Used the bigsmp kernel for the PAE support. Now shows a little above 4GB RAM and processors still shown correctly.

Solution - use bigsmp kernel!
