DESKTOP4.EXE remote execute command line parameter problems

This applies to:

  • Zenworks 7

Summary

Trying to run Remote Execute on a workstation, with the following command line:

desktop4 -w "cn=FRED123.ou=Test.ou=Workstations.ou=Staff.o=Org" -N"UOL" -c"Remote Execute"

This produces an error of:

"1487: You are attempting to launch the operation from an obsolete or invalid workstation object. Verify that the workstation object is valid."

The command runs correctly when "RemoteControl" is used in place of "Remote Execute"

Solution

It would appear that for RemoteControl operations, the dn can be fully qualified (e.g.cn=FRED123.ou=Test.ou=Workstations.ou=Staff.o=Org)

But for Remote Execute, the dn must not be qualified (e.g. FRED123.Test.Workstations.Staff.Org)

There is an inconsistancy with the Novell documentation and the standard which should be used when parsing the info to the command.

Novell will change documentation and for future enhancement will possibly change the code to correct the inconsistancy.
