Federated access management

The sheer volume of online resources now available is overwhelming, with millions more being added every day. Gaining access to these resources is a critical requirement for students and staff at educational establishments. With resources being located on different networks with widely varying sign-on and authorisation controls the need for a common standard is paramount.

There are currently 2 initiatives that are seeking to address these requirements: athens and Shibboleth. These enable a trust relationship to be built between Identity Providers and Service Providers. They devolve the responsibility for authentication to a user's home institution, and establish authorisation through the secure exchange of information (known as attributes) between the two parties.
