  • Inquire about exception monitoring systems.
  • Be vigilant around updates and making sure that your staff don't suddenly gain access privileges they're not supposed to.
  • Ask where the data is kept and inquire as to the details of data protection laws in the relevant jurisdictions.
  • Seek an "independent security audit" of the host
  • Find out which third parties the company deals with and whether they are able to access your data
  • Be careful to develop good "policies around passwords"; how they are created, protected and changed.

We might be in a recession guys but it would appear that Britain's recession-hit population would rather cut back on eating out and holidays than give up their broadband, mobile phone and pay-TV services, according to a new report from the media regulator - Ofcom. Other services which seem to be seen these days as essencial are digital video recorders and mobile broadband internet.

Yet another Friday Folks with the weekend fast approaching and yet another IT project has fallen by the way side this time a national crime system for the Police, Anti-terror and SOCA - with £24 million already spent the government have closed the purse on yet another expensive folly. Alan Johnson was in Manchester yesterday promoting the National identity scheme, you know the scheme nobody wants, according to the government however this has been very successful in its take up with the public (they won't release figures though).

Speaking to an NHS customer recently, I was surprised to hear that they didn't have any patch management solution in place on their Windows network (not even the free WSUS service from Microsoft). The reason given was that the customer "couldn't afford it".

More news from Microsoft: "Groove" has been renamed and is included in the forth-coming release of Office 2010. Its new names is "SharePoint Workspace 2010" also included is "Office Communicator 2007 R2"

The big news with this Office 2010 is that there will be two versions. The updated Office will be available in two separate formats
 
1/ A traditional PC-based edition.
2/ A completely web-based version.
